Phishing: 5 habits to avoid the trap
Most security incidents start with a simple fake email or text message. Five habits are enough to avoid most attacks.
Phishing tricks you into clicking a link, opening an attachment or sharing a code by impersonating someone you trust: your bank, a Mobile Money provider, a supplier, your management. It remains the main entry point for cyberattacks.
5 habits to adopt
- Check the real sender. Look at the full email address, not just the display name.
- Be wary of urgency. “Your account will be blocked in 24 hours”: pressure is the signature of scams.
- Check links before clicking. On a computer, hover over the link to see the real address; if in doubt, type the website address yourself.
- Never share a code. No genuine service will ask for your password or a verification code received by text message.
- Confirm through another channel. A transfer request or a change of bank details? Call the person on a number you already know.
What if I clicked?
- Alert your IT department immediately, without deleting anything.
- Change the password concerned from another device.
- Turn on two-factor authentication for your important accounts.
Regular staff awareness remains the most effective protection: an informed employee is worth more than many pieces of software.
