Choosing a business computer: a practical guide
Processor, memory, storage, warranty: the criteria that really matter for a durable work computer suited to its use.
A business computer is a work tool used every day for several years. Choosing it well means avoiding slowdowns, breakdowns and early replacement.
Start from the use
- Office work and email: a mid-range processor is enough; memory and an SSD make the difference.
- Business applications, large spreadsheets, many tabs: go for more memory.
- Graphics, video, development: a more powerful processor and memory, and a quality screen.
The key criteria
- Memory (RAM): 8 GB is today’s minimum; 16 GB gives comfort for several years.
- SSD storage: essential for speed; 256 GB minimum, 512 GB recommended.
- Business range: sturdier build, parts available for longer, stronger warranty.
- Battery life and weight for mobile staff.
- Warranty and after-sales service: a computer out of action often costs more than the price difference.
New or refurbished?
A refurbished business computer, tested and under warranty, is an economical and responsible option for many office uses. For demanding uses or critical workstations, new remains preferable.
